Kitchen Table

70 Charlotte St, LONDON, W1T 4QG

3 rosettes

It is just possible, of course, that you might want to book a restaurant table somewhere to thrash out the details of a contract, or catch up with an old friend. This isn't it. Kitchen Table is much more the kind of place you come not just to concentrate intensely on what you're eating, but to chat to the chefs about it while they're getting it ready. Nineteen inquisitive souls are berthed around two sides of the culinary action in a gently lit, almost after-hours kind of ambience. Around a dozen or more daily-changing dishes - really, who's counting? - will come your way, labelled by their main ingredients, which have themselves come the way of the kitchen according to what trusted suppliers have told them is good that day. Guest chefs happen in for one night only. It's an open-ended kind of a thing, a poster-child for new London dining. A menu might go something like this: Oyster; Chicken; Scallop; Monkfish; Sole; Truffle; Asparagus; Duck; Goat; Rhubarb; Orange; Caramel. And that's pretty much all you need to know in advance of the arrival of each explosively creative dish. One or two items are stalwarts of the repertoire, such as the crispy chicken skin with rosemary mascarpone and bacon jam, while others come and go. Roe deer on a bed of shredded onion simmered in yogurt with slivered raw chestnuts and elderberries, burrata with damson purée, the curiously intense pear sponge with svelte liquorice ice cream are all deeply memorable morsels. Occasionally, the slight air of the science laboratory creates expectations that aren't quite fulfilled on the palate, but overall the aim is true, and the scattergun approach means there's always something new to talk about.
