18 Wellington Street, Covent Garden, LONDON, WC2E 7DD

1 rosettes

This bustling Covent Garden operation opened its doors in 1991 and has been trading in America's classic cuisine ever since, other than a brief hiatus in early 2013 when it closed for a top-to-tail refurbishment. The end results are a more art-deco-inspired look, more flexible all-day serving, and new American dishes to show that stateside cooking goes beyond steaks and burgers. That said, shellfish and steaks (some imported from the USA) form a sizeable chunk of the menu, but elsewhere there may be foie gras and chicken liver parfait with orange Muscat jelly and pineapple and chilli relish, or slow-cooked belly pork with Boston baked beans, feta and celeriac slaw. The Stars and Stripes is represented by Caesar salad among starters, the range broadened by the likes of carpaccio, and goats' cheese soufflé, while bringing up the rear are New York-style cheesecake, and pecan maple tart with vanilla ice cream.
