Hyde Park Corner, LONDON, SW1X 7TA
The Rosette award for this establishment has been suspended due to a change of chef. Reassessment will take place in due course under the new chef. The Lanesborough is pretty much at the beating heart of the capital as its porticoed and balustraded frontage faces Hyde Park from the famous Corner, with a pillared and pedimented elevation at the back. The place exudes five-star class from every pore, from the moment somebody opens your taxi door to the luxurious book-lined bar, which feels like somewhere you might work on your memoirs, to a dining room with dripping chandeliers and an array of cameos mounted on walls in robin's-egg blue. The cooking has taken on a gilded contemporary French ambience, complete with theatrical presentations - the truffle-powdered Landes foie gras and brioche come to table looking like a mossy bank on a wooden board, or there may be langoustine ravioli, the claw meat whisked into a velouté spiked with espelette pepper. Main courses pull out the stops for stunning venison smoked over juniper wood, presented before carving, lustrously coloured with beetroot and cabbage in imperial purple, in an intense red wine jus, or perhaps poached cod with Tokyo turnips in brown shrimp broth. At dessert, a dark chocolate cube filled with mint sorbet is like the greatest after-dinner mint ever, and comes garnished with a chocolate twig sprouting mint leaves.
