This palatial space with a magnificent plaster ceiling, chandelier, and walls crowded with pictures, is nothing like a tavern. Jason Atherton oversees the cooking, which is in his contemporary brasserie style. Restyled classics such as lobster and prawn cocktail, or a starter of chicken liver and foie gras parfait with a jointed quail in sherry caramel, get things going. Main dishes might be Gruyère-crusted cod with braised clams and leeks, gnocchetti and sprouting broccoli, or try almost homely roast chicken breast with bacon and mash in coq au vin sauce with smoked garlic salsa verde. Rhubarb trifle and lemon thyme ice cream, topped with crumbled meringue, arrives in a jar.
