Babbo Restaurant

39-40 Albemarle Street, LONDON, W1S 4JQ

2 rosettes

The name means 'daddy' In Italian, and black-and-white family photos on the walls reinforce the family theme, together with warm yellow tones, buttoned leather banquettes and hardwood floors to add an edge of Mayfair class. While the food has its roots in tradition - salt-crusted sea bass, or veal Milanese, for example - and the kitchen ships in top-class gear from Italy in the name of authenticity, the menu heads off along more inventive paths to deliver the likes of scallop carpaccio with mango, avocado, hazelnuts and lime dressing, followed by halibut matched with home-made yoghurt, blood orange, parsnip crisps and caviar. To finish, there may be chocolate mousse with sesame ice cream.
