Assunta Madre

9-10 Blenheim Street, LONDON, W1S 1LJ

1 rosettes

This popular Italian is named after a fishing boat owned by proprietor Giovanni Micalusi, himself an ex-fisherman. Not surprisingly, the freshest seafood and fish, much of it flown in from Italy every day, is the deal here and there's even a fish tank near the board displaying photos of Micalusi with visiting film stars. The time-honoured combination of brick walls and beams provides a classic trattoria backdrop to a meal that might begin with vermicelli alle vongole veraci - a pasta dish packed with clams - followed by pescespade in guazzetto comprising slices of swordfish in a light tomato and olive sauce. A simple cherry tart is a typical dessert.
