The Halfway Bridge Inn

Halfway Bridge, LODSWORTH, GU28 9BP

1 rosettes

This classy 18th-century roadside inn makes an inviting pitstop after a hike on the South Downs Way or a leisurely perusal of Petworth's antique emporia. The ambience is friendly and unbuttoned, while the kitchen deals in pub classics given a contemporary tweak, and with emphasis on local, seasonal materials. Kick off with potted game terrine with a classic duo of Cumberland sauce and melba toast, and follow with another rib-sticking idea - twice-cooked pork belly, rolled and stuffed with garlic and herbs, alongside bubble-and-squeak, and pear and cider sauce. To finish, cherry and almond frangipane tart comes with excellent vanilla and tonka bean ice cream.
