Llangoed Hall

LLYSWEN, Nr Brecon, LD3 0YP

3 rosettes

A fabulous country house hotel with all the traditional features and period details you could hope for. The original Jacobean hall was rebuilt in the early 20th century by Clough Williams-Ellis, who also designed and built Portmeirion. There's an air of comfortable Edwardian glamour, with fine furniture, impressive fireplaces, and 17 acres of lawns, gardens and grounds - they even have a maze. The stylish Wedgwood blue and white restaurant is a smart, airy space, and head chef Nick Brodie can be confident in the provenance of his ingredients - much of the produce comes from the estate and kitchen garden. Diners can choose either the 4 course menu offering multiple choices on each course or a prestige menu of 9 courses (there's a vegetarian version as well) offering a series of carefully constructed and elegantly conceived dishes. Menus offer simple descriptions, and might move from gnocchi, ham, tomato through scallop ceviche, caviar and English wasabi, foie gras, smoked eel and puffed rice, to Wagyu beef, black bean and mushroom, finishing with meringue, rhubarb, sorrel and pineapple. It's impressive cooking of the modern British school, every element pays its way and it all looks stunning on the plate.
