The London Carriage Works

40 Hope Street, LIVERPOOL, L1 9DA

1 rosettes

The stripped-back interior of the one-time carriage workshop is a very modern sort of dining room, with decorative shards of floor-to-ceiling glass and lots of exposed bricks, plus large windows to give a view of the street action. There's plenty of room between the lightwood tables and the young service team are attentive. The menu makes much of provenance and there's a satisfying regional flavour to the menu. Grilled fillet of Menai mackerel might kick things off, or breast of Lakeland wood pigeon with a beetroot and green peppercorn sauce. There are sharing platters, too, with vegetarian, seafood and meaty options, plus salads such as one with marinated herring fillets and new potatoes. Main-course assiette of Blackface Suffolk lamb consists of loin, shoulder and kidney, or go for roast breast of Gressingham duck with jasmine tea, pink grapefruit and root ginger jus. Desserts run to Sicilian lemon and raspberry tart - good and zesty - with raspberry sorbet and sesame tuile, and there's a good selection of British cheeses.
