The Old Bakery

26-28 Burton Road, LINCOLN, LN1 3LB

2 rosettes

In the Uphill district of this undulating city, very near the cathedral and castle, Ivano and Tracey de Serio's restaurant with rooms is a distinctly homely place, with the feel of a farmhouse kitchen in the tiled dining room. A dresser furnished with produce baskets and a wine rack overlook proceedings, and the kitchen turns out a fairly lengthy menu of modern British food that has most of the technical tricks of today's culinary fashion at its disposal. Pork chine terrine, served with apples stewed in ginger beer, saffron piccalilli and pickled cucumber, is a beguiling mixture of messages to begin, while main courses are multi-layered, richly sauced affairs, running from, say, roast rack of lamb in a deeply flavoured tomato reduction with lovage-infused potatoes and roasted beetroot and aubergine to the market fish of the day. A five-course taster menu offers a comprehensive tour, and desserts include white chocolate and pistachio ganache with vanilla pannacotta and delicately flavoured star anise ice cream.
