The Old Bakery

26-28 Burton Road, LINCOLN, LN1 3LB

2 rosettes

Close to Lincoln Cathedral, this former bakery turned restaurant with rooms is a charmingly rustic place, partly thanks to plenty of surviving period features, and note there's now a fabulous deli from which you can take home all sorts of goodies. The restaurant still has the old ovens in situ (now defunct), plus the original hand-operated wooden mixing vat has been split and made into bench seating, with the rustic-chic dining rooms extending into a conservatory-style garden room. The passionate Italian chef-patron and his small kitchen team deliver clearly-flavoured, carefully-crafted dishes based on local, seasonal Lincolnshire produce. The weekly-changing menu brings together contemporary British and Italian ideas, so after tucking into home-made foccacia presented in white bags as per a bakery, you can tuck into Eden Farm organic roasted butternut squash and garlic soup with sherry-braised onion crostino and crème fraîche jelly. And for main course Peter Lundgren slow-roasted Gloucestershire Old Spot baby pig might come with stir-fried garlic potato, cinnamon-braised apple and red cabbage, and smoked pancetta cream.
