Lavenham Great House 'Restaurant with Rooms'

Market Place, LAVENHAM, CO10 9QZ

3 rosettes

The Georgian fa?ade masks the Great House's true antiquity: sitting in pride of place opposite the medieval market town's timber-framed Guildhall, it was actually built in the 14th and 15th centuries by a family of textile barons. In the same way that the building is rooted into Lavenham's fabric, the elegant restaurant with rooms within its venerable walls is a veteran of the local dining scene, run by chef-patron Regis Crepy since 1985. It's not all about Tudor timbers though, for the dining room has been given a calm and soothing, thoroughly modern look combining age-old dark oak floorboards and sturdy brick inglenooks with panelled walls painted in soft tones, and comfy chairs upholstered in classy sage and midnight-blue leather at white-clothed tables set with flowers and sparkling glasses. Despite the quintessentially English setting, this is an outpost of la belle France, evident in the Gallic accents of the slick, all-French front-of-house team, through to the skilled cooking, which is rooted in the great French repertoire. Creative flair suffuses the menu, starting with a pressing of white crab meat partnered with butternut squash chutney, grilled langoustine and mint and coriander vinaigrette, through to a main course starring roast saddle of lamb with a delicate pea pannacotta, pea shoot salsa, buttered Charlotte potatoes and lemongrass and oregano jus. Fish dishes, too, are characterised by vibrant flavours brought together in harmonious, multi-layered combinations, perhaps roast monkfish with red onion and walnut marmalade, Roquefort cheese cream spiced with Pyrenean espelette peppers, and glazed balls of Williams pear. To finish, a classic rum baba is filled with cr?me p?tissi?re and gets extra va-va-voom with confit pineapple and Pina Colada sorbet.
