A former tweed mill alongside the River Gynack, The Cross has long been a regional dining hotspot and since taking over in 2012, Derek and Celia Kitchingman have continued to build on its reputation. The stunning setting within the Cairngorm National Park doesn't change, of course, and remains as peaceful and uplifting as ever. Expect stylish public rooms, pretty bedrooms and a smart, traditional restaurant - think dark wood ceiling, whitewashed stone walls, and a striking yellow and black carpet. In the kitchen, David Skiggs delivers creative modern food via a three-course fixed-price menu or signature tasting option (lunch must be booked in advance), with seasonal and local ingredients to the fore. A tasting dish of duck arrives on a glass plate, the silky parfait, smoked breast and confit leg looking pretty as a picture, followed by loin of George Gow's lamb with a fabulous jus gras served in a little glass teapot. A fish option might be line-caught sea bass with crispy chicken wing and tortellini filled with hazelnut and parsnip. For dessert, 'variations of apple' includes a candied apple-infused sponge and sorbet, with a clever ginger custard espuma on the side. The owners take a hands-on approach front of house, and if you've room, let them talk you through the dessert trolley.
