The whitewashed 17th-century hotel lies a short drive from Oban on a peninsula jutting into Loch Awe, framed by timeless Highland landscapes. The kitchen delivers five-course set dinner menus beginning with a soup - courgette, with perch and tarragon oil - ahead of a colourful composition involving tomato terrine with home-cured salmon, carrot purée, caviar, pickled cucumber, quail's egg and ruby chard. The main event stars Highland beef (roasted sirloin and slow-braised ox cheeks) with pearl barley, dauphinoise potato, wilted spinach, chargrilled courgettes and a rich red wine jus. Then it's strawberries with vanilla pannacotta, mascarpone, puff pastry and crème fraîche sorbet before a finale of oak-smoked brie on toast.
