The Ickworth

HORRINGER, Bury St Edmunds, IP29 5QE

2 rosettes

When Frederick Hervey, 4th Earl of Bristol, lived here in the early 18th century, he commissioned the impressive Rotunda to house his treasures. Frederick's, the restaurant named after him, is not without its delights either, not least its traditional style, crisp white linen, floor-to-ceiling windows and highly professional service. Maybe that it's a child-free zone is another. From the modern European menu consider seared king scallops, crushed peapods, home-cured ham and lemon; glazed rump, slow-cooked belly and cheek of Blythburgh pork, black pudding hash, smoked onions and baby leeks; and chocolate brownie with Jaffa cake ice cream. The long wine list takes a well-considered global approach.
