73 East Street, HORNCASTLE, LN9 6AA
In a terrace of 200-year-old cottages, Magpies has decor of duck-egg blue, with mirrors, candlelight and drapes over the bay windows. Slow-roast pork belly might kick things off, spiced up with star anise accompanied by tortellini sauced with apple, garlic and Yarg, and crisp salt-and-pepper crackling. Roast loin of cod as a main goes Eastern, served in hoi sin sauce with a spicy vegetable spring roll, chilli-spiked Chinese leaves and rösti, or there may be fillet of venison stuffed with figs and macadamias served with sweet potato terrine, savoury Savoy cabbage and bread sauce. To finish, try a trio of desserts: chocolate mousse, espresso crème brûlée and dark chocolate fondant.
