The Anchor Riverside Pub and Restaurant

Ferry Road, Hullbridge, HOCKLEY, SS5 6ND

1 rosettes

Shortly before the road ends at the River Crouch is this thoroughly modern gastro-pub where, if the weather's kind, you can sit outside in the extensive gardens with something grilled, a salad or just a sandwich. Otherwise, head for the restaurant, designed for lingering over a decent three-course meal. Try roasted hand-dived scallops with crispy suckling pig and apple purée, followed by tandoori-roast monkfish with masala potatoes and spinach, or duck cottage pie with wild mushrooms, pumpkin jam and chestnuts. Custard tart with grated nutmeg makes for a good dessert, but you might go for British cheeses with biscuits, pickled onions, grapes and piccalilli, or have both.
