A classic English country inn in a ravishing setting near Highclere Castle. Traditional English cooking is the order of the day, overlaid with modern flourishes. Cod and salmon fishcakes are seasoned with chilli and dressed in mango mayonnaise, and local asparagus in season is topped with poached eggs and hollandaise. Roast lamb loin is spectacularly full of flavour, enhanced by chargrilled veg and a gutsy, garlicky salsa verde, while fish might be sparkling-fresh chalk-stream trout with new potatoes. A list of 'The Usual Suspects' keeps the fish and chips and burger brigade content. Cherry Bakewell is as good as it gets outside Derbyshire, matched with vanilla cream and cherry coulis.
