The Cherry Tree Inn

Main Street, Stoke Row, HENLEY-ON-THAMES, RG9 5QA

1 rosettes

The Cherry Tree has been standing on this spot for 400 years and retains a palpable sense of history in its original flagstone floors, beamed ceilings and open fireplaces. New owners have freshened it all up lately though, and now that old-world look is nicely complemented by new wood furniture, rugs on stripped wooden floors, and tea lights and pot plants on the tables. Modern jazz plays in the background and super-friendly staff really keep the customers happy. There's seating outside, too, if the weather's playing ball. The monthly-changing menu is characterised by good honest food, well-prepared and presented and complemented by a few daily specials. Pan-fried scallops, pig's trotter and garlic mayonnaise makes a superb starter, with every component perfectly cooked. Berkshire pork cooked three ways with salt-baked celeriac and mash might follow, with hazelnut and gingerbread cookie with white chocolate ice cream Turkish Delight making an inventive ending.
