2 Maldon Road, GREAT TOTHAM, CM9 8NH
This 16th-century village inn has an uncommonly posh eating area, the Willow Room, where the kitchen produces a repertoire of modernised pub classics and forays into the contemporary. Crisp-fried duck's egg with truffle-dressed Russian salad is an interesting starter, while mains might bring well-timed John Dory with warm potato and olive salad, pancetta and watercress, or breast of Barbary duck, the leg meat parcelled in tortellini, with puréed quince and creamed cabbage in blackberry jus. A typical dessert might be rich summer berry pannacotta with mint sorbet, or chocolate fondant with pistachio ice cream. A three-meat mixed roast with Yorkshire pudding is the star of the Sunday lunch offering.
