2 Maldon Road, GREAT TOTHAM, CM9 8NH
There's no lack of distractions at The Bull. Cabaret tribute nights featuring the work of Robbie Williams and Dame Shirley Bassey are just the start of it. The 16th-century village inn has come roaring into the modern world, not least by means of an uncommonly posh eating area, the Willow Room, kitted out with a panelled bar, double-layered napery and chandeliers. Smartly attired staff keep things ticking over out front, while the kitchen produces a repertoire of mixed and modernised pub classics and forays into the contemporary. Crisp-fried duck's egg with truffle-dressed Russian salad is an interesting starter, while mains might bring on well-timed John Dory with warm potato and olive salad, pancetta and watercress, or breast of Barbary duck, the leg meat parcelled in tortellini, with pur?ed quince and creamed cabbage in blackberry jus. There's much to choose from, and most of it makes a big impact, through to rich summer berry pannacotta with mint sorbet, or chocolate fondant with pistachio ice cream. A three-meat mixed roast with Yorkshire pudding is the star of the Sunday lunch offering.
