16 Byres Road, GLASGOW, G11 5JY
This dinky neighbourhood restaurant on Glasgow's vibrant Byres Road has a strong local fan base who appreciate its unbuttoned vibe and the kitchen's creative approach to modern Scottish cooking. It is an elbow-to-elbow sort of space with a pocket-sized downstairs area, and a mini-mezzanine above, all decorated with colourful artwork, and kept ticking over by casually dressed, on-the-ball staff. The chefs beavering away in the open-to-view kitchen aren't scared to experiment with novel flavour combinations, without losing sight of the seasons and the local supplies that come with them. A summer's lunch starts conventionally enough by bringing together a chicken liver and foie gras parfait with peach chutney and herb croûtons, before deploying a vibrant barrage of flavours in a main course of sea bream fillet with fennel, cucumber and olive salad, basil and almond gremolata, and pesto. Pudding delivers a subtly-flavoured combo of lavender pannacotta, poached plums and rhubarb.
