The Pheasant

1 rosettes

A spruced-up 500-year-old country inn on the road between Sudbury and Halstead, The Pheasant's trimly beamed ceilings are exactly what you expect to see, and dining goes on in a trio of interconnecting rooms adorned with plenty of greenery. Battered tiger prawns with garlic mayonnaise feature alongside grilled goats' cheese in sweet chilli dressing, before the main attraction arrives in the shape of local farm sausages with creamy mash and onion gravy, or duck breast with orange and fennel salad. Most things come with hand-cut chips, including the half-pound sirloins, and there are sticky toffee pudding in caramel sauce, or cider-laced apple crumble with real custard bringing up the rear.
