Glenlo Abbey Hotel

Kentfield, Bushypark, GALWAY, Co Galway, ROI,

1 rosettes

As if this grandiose country house built in the early Georgian era didn't have architectural diversion enough, its dining room has been fashioned from a pair of railway carriages from the Orient Express. It's a splendid design concept, and makes an elegant setting for the traditionally based European cooking on offer. A seafood path might take you from seared king scallops on onion soubise with watercress pesto to potato-scaled turbot en papillote in a capered white wine sauce. Otherwise, go for Bluebell Falls goats' cheese mousse with beetroot, then venison loin with wild mushrooms and rowanberries. For afters, the rich chocolate pudding is well matched with a sharp-tasting blackcurrant sorbet.
