Restaurant 56

Sudbury House, 56 London Street, FARINGDON, SN7 7AA

3 rosettes

The handsome Georgian house was once owned by music critic and BBC Controller of Music, Sir William Glock, and, now much extended, it is a useful bolt hole on the edge of the Cotswolds for business events, weddings, and anyone who has got wise to the exciting contemporary cooking of Andrew Scott. Surrounded by nine acres of its own lush green grounds, the original house has plenty of character. When it comes to dining, there's the choice of the modern Magnolia Brasserie or the elegant, refined fine-dining Restaurant 56. Here chef Scott delivers his three tasting menus ('Introduction', 'Prime' and 'Progressive'), and you can expect complex and creative courses based on first-class ingredients. A game terrine is pointed up by burnt orange and quince in an opening course on the shortest of the tasting menus, followed perhaps by cod ravioli in a roasted cod broth. Menu descriptions are brief and often enigmatic, particularly on the 'Progressive' menu - S&S minestrone, say, followed by pigeon 2012 - with top-notch ingredients to the fore and acute technical skills in evidence. Among sweet courses, rhubarb 'n' custard is an imaginative take on an old favourite, and mandarin parfait with granola and crème fraîche is a harmonious combination of flavours and textures.
