36 Southernhay East, EXETER, EX1 1NX
Captain William 'The Orientalist' Kirkpatrick of the East India Company bought this fine Georgian detached villa in 1805. Between then and 2011, when it became a boutique hotel, its occupants included doctors, physicians and a chartered accountancy practice. Perhaps that helps to explain why the sensitively designed dining room, with its artful juxtaposition of period and contemporary artwork, feels like a private members' club. On the short menu, among the essentially British dishes are crispy ham hock with soft-boiled egg and apple; hake with purple sprouting broccoli and confit potato; fillet steak, fondant potatoes, wild mushrooms and cherry tomatoes; and banana parfait with coconut sorbet.
