Huxham, Stoke Canon, EXETER, EX5 4EJ
Just a few miles from Exeter, this 17th-century thatched longhouse occupies a delightful rural spot. Low beams, inglenook fireplaces and cob walls abound, and while the minstrels' gallery looks like it could do service as a medieval banqueting hall, there's nothing archaic about what arrives on the plate in the restaurant. The kitchen deals in straightforward Anglo-European cooking, sending out a rustic, creamy chicken liver parfait with onion toast and orange chutney. Main course sees precisely-timed sea bass fillets teamed with a tomato and basil tart, while enterprising desserts include vanilla pannacotta, peach compôte and hazelnut wafers.
