The Langdale blends into its beckside surroundings with stone construction, neutral interiors and a view of a tumbling waterfall through a picture window in the bar. The gastronomic action is in Purdey's dining room, where oak-smoked salmon is served warm and accompanied by the de rigueur beetroot and a horseradished potato mousse, or there may be pigeon breast with pine kernels and textures of onion. Chicken is teamed with wild mushrooms and truffled gnocchi in tarragon jus, while fish could be fine seared stone bass with samphire and asparagus, as well as a crisply battered oyster. A custard slice with pear sorbet, hazelnut crumble and honeycomb makes a good finish.
