7 Dock Place, EDINBURGH, EH6 6LU

2 rosettes

The Leith dock area does not want for good places to eat, but Mithas is a great addition to the community - a modern Indian restaurant with real va-va-voom. It avoids clichés in the décor and on the menu, whilst respecting tradition. The kitchen is open to view so the tantalising sight and smells of the searing grill and tandoori ovens gets you in the mood. The quality of the ingredients deserves a mention, as does the fact that they have a BYO policy with no corkage charge for table wine or fizz. The à la carte menu is supported by tasting versions that are worth checking out. Start with partridge, marinated in honey and mustard and cooked in the tandoor, served with three sauces (plum chutney, sweet chilli and a dried spice), followed by samudri khazana, which is scallops, monkfish, mussels, clams, sea bass and langoustines served in a spring onion and coconut gravy - superb seafood and a great flavour. The carrot taster dessert makes a fabulous finale.
