Bistro 21

Aykley Heads House, Aykley Heads, DURHAM, DH1 5TS

1 rosettes

The bistro tag is on the money: whitewashed walls and pine floors, with the tables covered in white linen to provide the chic bit of the rustic-chic finish. The menu fits the bill, too, traversing the globe in search of winning combinations. It's an easy-going place with a few tables on the terrace for when the mercury rises, and there's a contented buzz about the place when it's busy (which it frequently is). A starter of Asian mussel and prawn broth shows the kitchen's willingness to extend into international waters, but there's also the more regionally inspired salad of kippers, with Pink Fir potatoes and soft-boiled egg. Slow-cooked belly and roast fillet of pork might feature among main courses, with apple and black pudding purée, perhaps, or go for a tart made with heritage beetroots and flavoured with blue cheese. Desserts are creative bunch, for example the hot rhubarb crumble soufflé.
