Bistro 21

Aykley Heads House, Aykley Heads, DURHAM, DH1 5TS

1 rosettes

From the outside, the bistro has a cottagey look, a feeling of rusticity extending inside via stone floors, bare brick walls and low ceilings, although a central atrium adds a more modern touch. There's something reassuringly familiar about the menu, featuring as it does calves' liver with bacon, and a chunk of perfectly timed grilled cod with tartare sauce, chips and crushed peas, although the appeal is broadened by the likes of starters of Asian-style duck breast dressed with honey and mustard served with bean sprouts, and jasmine-cured salmon with watermelon and cucumber, and a main course like chicken breast with Moroccan-style couscous and lemon crème fraîche. Puddings are an enticing slate, from knickerbocker glory to steamed ginger sponge with rhubarb compôte and custard.
