Bistro 21

Aykley Heads House, Aykley Heads, DURHAM, DH1 5TS

1 rosettes

Satisfyingly free of airs and graces, this place stays true to its bistro moniker by combining a vibrant and easy-going atmosphere with simple, straightforward food with a bit of oomph. The converted former farmhouse over two floors has stripped wooden floors and whitewashed walls, plus a snug bar with a barrel-vaulted ceiling, and nabbing a table on the terrace is a treat when the weather is up to the job. The kitchen matches local ingredients with regional preparations and some global flavours in dishes that come under the modern British banner. Start with a pressed ham terrine with pickled veg, or a souffl? rich with gruy?re and leeks, before moving on to a perfectly cooked piece pan-fried cod with chargrilled squid and red pepper vinaigrette. There are daily specials, classic Sunday lunches, excellent veggie options, and private dining options. Finish with raspberry cheesecake and vanilla-baked peaches.
