The Old Inn

DREWSTEIGNTON, EX6 6QR

3 rosettes

In a charming village on the edge of Dartmoor, this former coaching inn houses Duncan Walker's small restaurant with three letting rooms and two dining rooms offering fewer than 20 covers. Calm, relaxing and informal are the buzz words here, with plain wooden furniture and subdued lighting in the dining rooms, one in sage green, the other claret, and a menu perfectly in keeping with the style of the place, offering just four choices per course at dinner. Walker's cooking is marked by a lack of sensationalism, judiciously combining top-drawer fresh ingredients so dishes are strong on flavours. Grilled loin of rabbit in Parma ham, moist and succulent, is accompanied by top-class gnocchi, lemon and sage as a starter, jostling for attention with sautéed lobster with pea and mint velouté. Main courses are intelligently composed too, with sauces and gravies adding depth: vanilla sauce for roast fillet of sea bass, of pinpoint accuracy, on a bed of spinach with scallops and asparagus, and Madeira jus for grilled loin of venison with black pudding and boulangère potatoes. Puddings elicit oohs and aahs, if passionfruit soufflé is anything to go by, the sauce poured in at table, accompanied by coconut ice cream.
