The Marquis at Alkham

Alkham Valley Road, Alkham, DOVER, CT15 7DF

3 rosettes

It's hard to believe that this was at one time a rundown old pub: a major renovation project a few years back has seen The Marquis of Granby (as it used to be) utterly transformed into a strikingly contemporary restaurant with rooms. Sitting in the heart of the delightful Kent Downs village of Alkham, within striking distance of the tiny cricket pitch (one of the smallest in England, apparently), the smart, white-painted building is in an idyllic spot. And once inside it's all just as lovely: whitewashed walls broken up with splashes of modern art, real-wood floors, fine furnishings, beautiful fabrics and subtle lighting set the tone in the restaurant, lounge and bar, and there are ten chic designer bedrooms (plus accommodation in two cottages at the restaurant's nearby sister business, the Chalksole Estate Vineyard). If the weather's playing ball you can sit outside on the lovely garden terrace and take in the views over the luscious Alkham Valley - perhaps with a glass of Chalksole Estate bubbly to get you in the mood for the creative cooking that's to come. Chef Charlie Lakin has made a well-deserved name for himself of late with his robust, imaginative food which unfailingly champions the best of Kentish produce along with a good measure of foraged ingredients. Menus are varied and there's a daily-changing table d'hôte as well as a seasonally-changing carte and Kent tasting menu. Fantastic freshly-made bread - white and brown sliced and caramelised onion rolls - with good quality butter gets things off to a promising start before a first course of tender fillets of pheasant served with razor-thin slices of crisp ham, roasted apples and ramson berries. Next up, a first-rate fillet of cod is teamed with finely shredded Savoy cabbage, smoked salmon dauphines (nicely crisp on the outside and fluffy in the middle) and a rich Dijon mustard sauce and confit vegetables. A chestnut millefeuille is a pudding lover's dream - an excellent chestnut cream sandwiched between wonderfully crisp rectangles of puff pastry, accompanied by a crunchy 'nut soil', pumpkin praline and vanilla ice cream.
