High West Street, DORCHESTER, DT1 1UP
This mid-18th century coaching-inn has classic Georgian good looks, and behind its neat black railings it boasts grand staircases and imposing fireplaces - although the white-walled dining room opts for an uncluttered style, with bare floor and tables, and an unpretentious service approach. Local supply lines furnish Lyme Bay scallops with crispy pork and apple, or a classic duo of ham hock terrine and piccalilli, while main courses pile on the panache for roast monkfish and squid with chorizo, spring onions and saffron potatoes. Desserts to tickle the fancy include a chocolate pairing (milk parfait and dark mousse) with honeycomb and raspberries.
