DODDISCOMBLEIGH, Exeter, EX6 7PS
This characterful 17th-century inn has a good local reputation, built upon many qualities including its stylish food, excellent local cheeses, hefty wine list and a 240-long list of whiskeys. Reached via, winding lanes, inside it has blackened beams, mismatched tables, and walls adorned with plenty of visual interest. The seasonal menu has its feet on the ground, so there are fish, chips and burgers alongside fare such as a warm, crisply coated chorizo scotch egg paired nicely with piri piri mayonnaise. At mains, try well-timed pan-fried lamb's liver with bacon, peas, good mash and onion gravy, before a well-textured and flavoured sticky ginger pudding with clotted cream.
