Bron Eifion Country House Hotel

1 rosettes

The luxuriantly creeper-clad house stands on the Llyn Peninsula, and has the dual charm of ravishing gardens and a stone's-throw proximity to the beach at Criccieth. Built as a private summer residence in 1883, it was conceived with rest and relaxation in mind, and retains that reputation today. A majestic staircase, oak panelling and comfortable country-house furniture give the right impression, though the Garden Room restaurant aims for a more contemporary look, with bare tables and windows all around. Modern Welsh cooking is what to expect, with a lengthy roll call of dishes utilising many of the favoured ingredients of the present. Seared scallops with crisp pancetta, pea purée and tempura-battered quail's egg is a modern classic with a tweak, and could be the prelude to roast duck breast in duck stock and plum sauce with potato gratin, sweet-and-sour cabbage and a white vegetable purée. End on a high with strawberry cheesecake mousse, served with dried strawberries and sorbet.
