The Old Schoolhouse Inn

100 Ballydrain Road, COMBER, BT23 6EA

2 rosettes

Ensconced in the Down countryside by Strangford Lough, The Old Schoolhouse turns out modern cooking that's full of lively inspiration. Seafood is a strong suit, perhaps for crab with a smoked mackerel fishcake, beetroot and apple, or in scallops teamed with pork belly, Alsace bacon and butter beans. Duck from a local farm is served as breast and a roll of confit leg and shredded potato, with creamed cabbage and puréed carrot aromatised with star anise, while mussels are given a main-course marinière spin with Armagh cider, shallots and buckwheat. The signature dessert is high-powered chocolate marquise with intense vanilla ice cream, cocoa nibs and honeycomb.
