Ranfield's Brasserie

4-6 Stoneham Street, COGGESHALL, CO6 1TT

2 rosettes

The brasserie has been a fixture of the local dining scene for almost 30 years. Its setting may be a 16th-century timbered house, but there's nothing old-style about the approach. The mood is laid-back and cosmopolitan and the one-off decor is akin to an eclectic art gallery done out with antique linen-clothed tables. Smart complex modern food is the deal, opening with a cake of blue crab, brown shrimps and lime, garnished with pickled sweetcorn and lotus-root salad, before braised breast and seared saddle of excellent salt-marsh lamb with houmous and sauce vièrge. Finish with Amarena cherry and almond tart and vanilla ice cream.
