Westgate, CLIFTON, Brighouse, HD6 4HJ
This whitewashed 17th-century inn has the look of a traditional pub with its down-to-earth beamed bar with a real fire, and - more to the point - real ales. But give the menu a quick once-over, and it's clear that the Black Horse is more about food these days. A brace of stylish dining rooms offers different settings: one is more casual with high-backed leather chairs and bare darkwood tables, the other more formally dressed in white linen; on a fine day, the courtyard is an appealing spot too. Wherever you choose, the kitchen turns out contemporary ideas with a modish flourish here and there, all built on locally-sourced ingredients. Ox cheek croquette with onion purée, pickled chestnut mushrooms and blue cheese foam makes a punchy impact, followed by confit Gressingham duck leg with sticky red cabbage, bubble-and-squeak and plum jus. Dessert ends impressively with popcorn pannacotta with caramel popcorn and chocolate tuile.
