This charming 18th-century townhouse in chocolate box Chipping Campden may be built of Cotswold stone but inside it's no twee country hotel. Instead, modern style oozes from its 14 individually designed bedrooms through to the mismatched furniture in the brasserie, bar (real ales on tap) and restaurant. In the latter, antique tables, a real log fire and atmospheric lighting provide the backdrop to seasonal modern British food which makes fantastic ingredients sing out in a menu that has something for everyone. Duck breast is smoked in-house and paired with violet potato salad, vegetable crisps and hazelnut dressing, while breast, cutlet and sweetbread of Lighthorne lamb comes with boxty potatoes, grilled carrots and minted pea purée among main courses. End with strawberry and rhubarb trifle and vanilla marshmallow.
