Pook Lane, East Lavant, CHICHESTER, PO18 0AX
This 200-year-old pub serves real ale but puts food reassuringly high on the agenda. It's all served up in a rustic interior with exposed brick walls, beams, leather-look chairs and wooden tables. A starter of pork and apricot ballotine with spiced apricot compôte and toasted sourdough raises the bar well above pub grub level, and main courses are just as intelligently put together. Succulent roast breast of guinea fowl comes with crisp potato rösti, wilted greens with pancetta and a punchy wild mushroom jus, and a trio of pork comprising belly, tenderloin and black pudding bonbons is matched with carrot and anise purée, purple sprouting broccoli and red wine jus.
