The Sticky Walnut

11 Charles Street, CHESTER, CH2 3AZ

2 rosettes

With its shop-front exterior and rough-and-ready rustic vibe, The Sticky Walnut is a neighbourhood restaurant for the 21st-century-unpretentious, chilled-out and serious about the end product. It is spread over two floors, with chunky wooden tables, blackboards and an open kitchen. On the plate is some seriously good stuff based on excellent seasonal ingredients. There's a broadly European spin to much of the menu and both concept and execution are pretty much bang on. Crispy lamb's tongue with chick pea purée, goats' curd and tomato is a first course that delivers complementary flavours and shows refinement in its presentation. Or choose Jerusalem artichoke soup with focaccia, or sea bream céviche, before a main course of roast grouse with a quenelle of pâté of the same, served with cocotte potatoes, parsnip purée and cavolo nero. With tip-top bread and desserts like blackberry and almond tart with bumper fruits and a perfect thin and crisp pastry base, this is a kitchen that delivers real impact in a relaxed, modern manner. The Sticky Walnut is the AA Restaurant of the Year for England 2014-15.
