Monty's Brasserie

The George delivers all the Regency style one hopes for in Cheltenham - Grade II listed no less, so plenty of period details inside and out, and grand Georgian proportions. There's a cocktail bar in the basement with a decidedly contemporary sheen, and in fact the whole place is done out with a good degree of finesse. Monty's matches the modish tone with its brasserie good looks - lots of darkwood, smart lighting - and a lively carte, backed with daily specials, and based on good quality ingredients. Start with a classic moules marinière done well, or chicken liver and black truffle parfait, before a main course such as Cotswold beef Wellington, or loin of monkfish wrapped in Serrano ham with confit grelot onions, creamed potatoes, carrot purée, creamed potatoes and a thyme and red wine sauce. The acute technical abilities of the team in the kitchen are on display again at dessert stage in the form of an excellent tiramisù cheesecake.
