The Pilgrims

Lovington, CASTLE CARY, BA7 7PT

2 rosettes

The name honours those who passed this way on their quest to find King Arthur's tomb. The stone-built inn is now a restaurant with rooms, run with cheerful bonhomie by the Mitchisons - Sally presiding over front of house and Jools running the kitchen with the sound ethos that the most important quality in a chef is restraint. The place showcases local suppliers, thus Lyme Bay scallops might be supported by local black pudding and sweet potato purée, while roast pheasant breast wrapped in thigh meat with pork, pistachios and bacon is matched with braised Savoy cabbage. Dessert is a simple but effective cider-cooked Somerset apple crumble.
