Alveston House Hotel

Davids Lane, ALVESTON, Bristol, BS35 2LA

1 rosettes

A white Georgian hotel with a small portico entrance, set within walled gardens with a restaurant to one side, Alveston House is well worth the short drive out from Bristol. The gardens with their ornamental lily-pond are a pleasant spot for a drink, and inside the place is done in calming pastel shades, not the nerve-twanging primary colours favoured by many a boutique hotel. Carriages, the dining room, is all light lemon and cream, a restful neutral backdrop to the gently modernised British fare on offer. Steamed Fowey mussels marinière, or a tartlet of asparagus, leeks and peas with herb salad, could be the curtain-raisers to bacon-wrapped cod with baby greens, sundried tomatoes and olives, or rump and kidney of lamb with red cabbage and mashed potato in grain mustard jus. Finish indulgently with chocolate, almond and hazelnut torte and crème fraîche, or more lightly with lemon tart, mango sorbet and raspberries. Coffee comes with home-made shortbread.
