The Links, CARNOUSTIE, DD7 7JE
The golf course needs no introduction. The fact the Dalhousie Restaurant overlooks the legendary links (scene of the 136th British Open) is worth shouting about. It's a large hotel with its eyes on the prize of the corporate market, with leisure and spa facilities aplenty to further broaden its appeal. The restaurant is a traditional-looking space with those iconic golfing views and some bright contemporary cooking. Start, perhaps, with a modern classic such as Stornoway black pudding with a soft poached egg, pancetta crisp and hollandaise sauce. There's a good deal of regional produce on the menu bringing a local flavour to proceedings. For main course, braised daube and cheeks of beef come in a 'duo' with leek roulade and curly kale, and for dessert, there's excellent pastry skills on show in a caramelised apple frangipane tart with vanilla ice cream.
