Whitehouse Lane, Huntingdon Road, CAMBRIDGE, CB3 0LX
This lovely bow-fronted Victorian mansion is home to a sleek boutique hotel which artfully combines elegant period features with a contemporary sheen. The Graffiti restaurant sports abstract modern art on battleship-grey walls, burnished darkwood floors, and unclothed tables, while the large terrace is a crowd puller for alfresco aperitifs and fair weather dining. Like the décor, the food is vibrant and sets off along a modern British road with plenty of sunny Mediterranean flavours along the way. It gets off the blocks with a creative juxtaposition of mackerel tartare with celeriac pannacotta, pickled candied beetroot, horseradish cream and smoked sourdough bread. Next out, ballotine of cod shares a plate with salt cod and leek brandade, roasted cauliflower and cauliflower cheese purée, and lemon and caper brown butter, while game season might see roast haunch of venison matched with kohlrabi fondant, rainbow chard, parsley root purée and whisky sauce. The inventive flair is maintained in an enterprising finale of lemon olive oil cake with lemon yoghurt sorbet, raspberry, white chocolate and lavender.
