Macdonald Frimley Hall Hotel & Spa

Lime Avenue, CAMBERLEY, GU15 2BG

2 rosettes

The handsome mansion not far off the M3 was once home to William Valentine Wright, the man who gave Britain Coal Tar Soap. Its Linden restaurant has an intimate candlelit ambience in the evenings. A modern menu juxtaposes pressed corn-fed chicken terrine with rhubarb three ways and gingerbread, before main-course choices that take in fried hake fillet with truffled potato crush in lemon butter, or baked guinea fowl with a croquette of rosemary polenta in wild mushroom jus. Thoroughbred Scottish steaks are a popular feature, as are the intriguing desserts, which include chocolate and cherry cheesecake with popping chocolate soil, and 'torn' lemon sponge with crème fraîche sorbet.
