Overlooking the Camber shoreline near Rye, the Gallivant has its heart in New England, where that laid-back eastern seaboard style translates as oceans of space, light wood, café furniture and a feeling that you might have stepped accidentally on to a small cruise-liner. Sourcing from within a 30-mile radius is an especially good idea when the radius takes in impeccable bay seafood, Sussex charcuterie and salt marsh lamb. Ben Fisher sensibly keeps things simple, offering a brasserie menu that opens with half-pints of prawns, and oysters in shallot vinegar, as well as sharing boards of shellfish or meaty stuff like rillettes, chorizo and Scotch egg. Once you get into the main menu, there are classics such as devilled crab with melted cheese and soldiers, then catch of the day with hollandaise or salsa verde, or rump and ribs of local beef in red wine, and that all-important salt marsh lamb, served with truffle-oiled green beans, garlic aubergine and buttery mash. Sides include a salad of caramelised orange and fennel, and the closer could be warm chocolate doughnuts with thick cream for dunking.
