BURROW, Kirkby Lonsdale, LA6 2RJ
One of five Ribble Valley Inns, The Highwayman is built of pale local stone and stands just a field away from the River Lune. As well as the main restaurant and its smaller satellite rooms, there's seating outside for warmer days. Local place names pepper the menu, including Reggie's Goosnargh (a Lancashire village) chicken with Cumbrian ham-and-cabbage pressing and crispy chicken skin salad, and Flookburgh (on Morecambe Bay) shrimp porridge as starters. See also mains such as crispy black pudding with Kitridding (in deepest Cumbria) pig's cheek bacon, mashed potato, cabbage and pickled apples. The neighbouring county gets a name-check in lemon curd with Yorkshire rhubarb, rhubarb sorbet and meringue.
