Northcote Manor

BURRINGTON, Umberleigh, EX37 9LZ

2 rosettes

The old stone manor is these days a classy country-house hotel with an impressive restaurant. The menu makes good use of seasonal ingredients and there's a good showing of West Country game and seafood. Start with a succulent terrine of ham hock matched with apple chutney and honey-roasted parsnip purée, followed by line-caught mullet and seared scallops, partnered by silky pommes purée and butternut squash, all finished with a fresh herb dressing. Meat fans might go for a tournedos of free-range Devon Red Ruby beef with dauphinoise potatoes, woodland mushrooms, carrots and Madeira gravy, and for pud there's apple tarte Tatin with blackberry crumble, clotted cream and butterscotch sauce.
