Grove Road, BURNHAM, Slough, SL1 8DP
A grand Georgian pile in ten acres of pretty grounds, Burnham Beeches is a popular wedding venue, but it is worth checking out the restaurant called Gray's. This consists of two formal interlinked rooms, one rich with oak panels, with tables dressed up in white linen. There are daylight views into the garden through well-proportioned Georgian windows. The kitchen favours sound classical thinking, delivering gently modern dishes that won't scare the horses. Start with a salad of home-smoked chicken breast with crispy pancetta and a soft-poached quail's egg, or pan-fried scallops with creamed leeks and poached baby leeks. Main-course honey-roasted breast of Gressingham duck is an attractively presented plate, the meat nice and pink, with an accompanying croquette and port sauce. Finish with a Yorkshire rhubarb and ginger cheesecake, or the selection of British cheeses.
