The fish landed in Brixham ends up on menus around the country, but at the Quayside Hotel you can tuck into the fruits of these waters within sight of the fishing boats. The family-run hotel carved out of old fishermen's cottages has views over the harbour and bay beyond and its kitchen makes good use of the bounty on its doorstep. Salt-and-pepper Start Bay squid is one way to begin, or you might fancy their house prawn cocktail, served on chicory leaves. The availability of fish is dependent on the catch of course, so you might find black bream, red mullet and skate, or you might not. Baked monkfish with a citrus beurre blanc stars a fine piece of fish, but there are some meat options if you insist (confit duck, perhaps). River Dart oysters are a treat when available, and the plateau de fruits de mer is a tantalising choice if you can persuade someone to share it with you.
